The Nine Best Horse Movies
1.All The Pretty Horses (2000)
A very heartwarming and inspiring story that is set in the year 1949.
All the Pretty Horses is about a young cowboy, raised in a Texas ranch with his family, and his life journey, set around horses.
He encounters different heartbreaking scenarios (losing a friend, death of a loved one, stolen horses, imprisonment, and illicit affair), and riding into the setting sun.
To all those who grew up with horses and have deep passion for them, this is a story that will truly move you to tears.
It encourages love, boldness, loyalty, and perseverance. It is one of those horse movies that offers many lessons to live by.
2. Lean on Pete (2017)
Lean on Pete is another impressive horse movie that focuses on the journey and rough side of life of Charley and his horse (Pete).
Charley, being an orphan, found his home in Pete.
Pete, on the other hand, is a racehorse about to be slaughtered.
This is a story that depicts friendship, survival, courage, and the realities of the world we live in.
This 2017 British Drama film depicts what we all already know – that sometimes we can find salvation in horses.
I consider this as one of those horse movies that can have a positive impact on society, especially among teenagers who want to find their way in the world and start afresh.
3. War Horse (2011)
War Horse is another inseparable story between a young boy (Albert) and his horse (Joey).
Albert had been Joey’s trainer since birth, but at the outbreak of World War 1, Joey was sold by Albert’s father to the British Cavalry and got separated from each other since then.
Will Albert be able to find Joey and bring him back home?
This movie will bring a mixture of joy, sorrow, and thrill that will transform your being from the inner core.
4. The Black Stallion (1979)
The Black Stallion is a classic hit that received two Oscar nominations for an actor’s performance and for film’s editing.
It started as a classic children’s book that was published in 1974.
The book became so famous that they turned it into a movie 5 years later.
It is an interesting horse movie about a young boy and an Arabian stallion who got shipwrecked and stuck on an island, developing a strong bond.
Considering that it was recorded in the 70’s, expect a different vibe, as well as excitement & nostalgia.
5. The Horse Whisperer (1998)
This is another horse movie that will journey you through friendship, healing, marriage, love, and career choice.
When a teenager and her horse are traumatized from a riding accident, resulting in anger and bitterness, a mother’s love forced her to send both her daughter and horse to a Montana ranch to get help from the legendary “horse whisper.”
How can a horse whisperer heal them and change their course of time?
Watch this 1995 horse movie film and novel, starring actor & film director Robert Redford and world’s highest-paid actress Scarlett Johansson, if you want a brilliant masterpiece that will not disappoint!
6. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)
This is another interesting horse movie that is a personal favorite!
This 2002 DreamWorks Animation has a sense of realness to it, especially when it comes to communicating with horses.
Unlike other types of animation horse movies, where horses communicate with humans verbally, this Oscar nominated movie depicts a horse that communicates through sound and body language just like reality!
Kudos to the lead narrator, Matt Damon, for his great performance on portraying the thoughts and emotions of the horse in the movie!
If you’re planning a horse movie night with your kids, then this should be included in your list!
7. Buck (2011)
If you’re curious about what a real-life horse whisperer does, then this 2011 documentary film may just be right for you!
In this movie, horse whisperer and the lead consultant of the fictional movie The Horse Whisperer, Buck Brannaman, demonstrates his great leadership and passion for horses by the different training methods he uses.
If you are a horse rider, this movie will not only let you see behind the scene footage, but also gives you helpful insights on the proper ways to train and develop bonds with horses in a more humane and kind way.
8. Dreamer (2005)
Inspired by a true story, this 2005 horse movie is a must addition to your family movie night list!
It is a story about a father and daughter and their horse, Soñador.
Although the family bond was tight at the beginning, you will see from this movie how loss of quality time and mismanagement could estrange other priorities over time.
Personally, I recommend this horse movie to all families who are looking for something to do during their bonding time or if they want to learn valuable lessons about family relationships.
The most interesting part is how Soñador’s role in the movie can bring back the family’s strength and affection that got lost over the years.
Curious? There is no other way to find out than to watch the film.
9. Man From Snowy River
The Man From Snowy River is the classic coming-of-age story.
Set in 1880’s Australia, a young boy must become a man after the death of his father.
Beautiful scenery, amazing horses and a gripping tale, this movie will have you looking at your horse like a lazy pasture ornament!
Indeed, every movie has a lesson to learn! I hope you will not miss out on any of those horse movies I shared.
